Good Design Can Make Aged Care Communities Feel More Like Home

Mar 09, 2022

Since 2020 everyone has had to adjust to daily living styles that are not the norm. In retirement communities, senior residents often did not have choices. Seniors found that they were confined to the 550 to 1000 sq. ft. of space. This confinement was created for the safety of the seniors and community. However, this type of restraint played havoc emotionally, physically, and socially.

Our Soft Landings team leaders are very focused on the emotional state of our clients when helping in downsizing preparation; moving from the BIG HOUSE to a smaller retirement home can be emotional. Positive engagement during the space planning phase is essential in helping make a smooth transition.

What we have found by working through the logistics of space planning with our clients:

  1. They start to relax because they have control over where they are moving
  2. They feel secure because the furniture and items they love have been chosen by them to be moved
  3. Space planning allows them to see that all the items and furniture they have selected will fit
  4. They are excited to see the results
  5. Space planning minimizes anxiety and fear of the unknown because they already have positive expectations.

What is Soft Landings’ goal?  Well, to provide a Soft Landing.

We all hope we never have a pandemic like 2020 again. Knowing what makes a home for any individual allows at unprecedented times to feel safe, beautiful, and comfortable.

The article below gives a more in-depth insight into how a good design can make a retirement community feel more like home.
